Sister of influencer Mara Flávia Araújo speaks out after triathlon drowning death at 38
The influencer drowned during the swim portion of a triathlon in Texas
The sister of influencer Mara Flávia Araújo has shared an emotional tribute following the 38-year-old content creator’s tragic death during a triathlon event in Texas.
Araújo, who had more than 60,000 followers on Instagram and was known for her fitness-focused content, drowned on April 18 while competing in the swim portion of a triathlon in The Woodlands, Texas, authorities confirmed.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department said an investigation is ongoing, with an autopsy ordered by the county medical examiner.
On April 20, her sister Melissa Araújo broke her silence in a heartfelt Instagram post, describing her grief and honoring her sibling’s life and strength.
“You lived life intensely. You were always synonymous with determination, with courage — with a strength that seemed too vast to be contained within you,” Melissa wrote.
She continued by calling her sister her “other half,” adding: “A piece of me is gone, and I will have to learn to live without it. And it hurts in a way I cannot even explain.”
Melissa described the loss as creating a “strange silence” and a “void,” saying the world feels “as if it had lost a little of its color.”
Araújo was competing in Ironman Texas, a grueling endurance race that includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and 26.2-mile run. Officials said she went underwater during the swim portion and was later recovered by the Woodlands Fire Department.
The Ironman organization confirmed the incident in a statement, offering condolences to the athlete’s family and friends and thanking first responders for their efforts.
In her tribute, Melissa reflected on their close bond, writing that although they were “always a team,” she believes that connection continues in a different form.
“I will carry you with me in everything I do,” she wrote. “Rest now, my sister. It will hurt down here, but I will honor your life every single day.”
Araújo’s final social media posts had shown her training in preparation for the competition, highlighting her dedication to the sport in the days leading up to the event.
