In a poignant interview with VIBE published on Wednesday, the acclaimed singer Kehlani opened up about her ongoing journey with mental health.
One year after revealing her diagnoses of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and bipolar disorder, the 30-year-old artist shared the realities of navigating life with these conditions.
"When you finally have the tools, you have the diagnosis. But along with the diagnosis comes the work," Kehlani remarked, highlighting the discipline required for her stability.
The "Folded" singer explained that her path to wellness has involved medication, various forms of therapy, and somatic healing.
This journey has equipped her with a "tool belt of awareness," allowing her to identify specific triggers. Kehlani noted, "I'm starting to learn what kind of life I have to lead as a person whose mind is different."
To maintain her health, she relies on transparency with her support system, asking them to intervene if she shows signs of crisis, such as insomnia or rapid speech.
Reflecting on the catalyst for her diagnosis, Kehlani admitted that "extreme paranoia" regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza led to a personal breaking point.
She confessed, "I wouldn't have gotten the diagnosis if I didn't fly off the handles the way that I did." This vulnerability follows her 30th birthday Facebook post in April 2025, where she first shared her health status.
Looking forward, the double Grammy winner, who recently triumphed with "Folded," is set to release her self-titled album on 24 April.
