Jamie-Lynn Sigler shares emotional struggles from ‘toxic and complicated’ union
The actress admitted she feared she wouldn’t 'survive' if the relationship had continued
Jamie-Lynn Sigler has opened up about a deeply difficult chapter in her life, revealing that she once fantasised about her own death while trapped in what she describes as a “toxic and complicated” first marriage.
In reflections tied to her memoir And So It Is, the actress revisited her relationship with former husband A.J. Discala, whom she married at the age of 22.
The union, which lasted three years, left her feeling overwhelmed and emotionally isolated.
Sigler clarified that her thoughts at the time were not driven by a desire to end her life, but rather a desperate plea for help.
“It wasn’t even really about suicide. It was a cry for help,” she said, explaining that she needed someone to understand how frightened and consumed she felt.
The former The Sopranos star described the marriage as “disastrous,” admitting she often felt like a failure and struggled to find the strength to leave.
She added that discovering troubling behavior reinforced her decision, ultimately realising she “was not going to survive much longer” if the relationship continued.
Despite her current perspective, Sigler acknowledged the emotional complexity of the time, noting that she had relied heavily on Discala for support.
Looking back, she believes they were both caught in a situation that spiraled into something unhealthy.
“I desperately needed him at that time,” she said, while also recognising that, in hindsight, she may have been taken advantage of during a vulnerable period in her life.
Sigler has since found stability and happiness in her marriage to Cutter Dykstra, with whom she shares two children.
She recalled knowing early on that their relationship was different, describing a sense of safety and connection she had not experienced before.
