Britney Spears faces court hearing after alleged erratic driving in California
Britney Spears remains the subject of a legal case following her March arrest
- Britney Spears has been formally charged with one count of driving under the influence.
- The singer’s legal team describes the March highway incident as completely inexcusable.
- Spears is currently in rehabilitation and may plead to a lesser reckless driving charge.
The Ventura County District Attorney's Office officially filed a criminal charge against pop star Britney Spears on Thursday, following her arrest for allegedly driving under the influence.
The singer was detained on 4 March after authorities observed her driving her BMW "erratically at a high rate of speed" on a Southern California highway.
Legal representatives for Spears have since addressed the situation, describing the incident as "completely inexcusable" and confirming that the global icon has since checked herself into a rehabilitation treatment facility to address ongoing personal challenges.
Spears is scheduled for a court hearing this coming Monday morning, though, as the matter is classified as a minor charge, her physical presence is not legally required.
"Whether or not Spears will appear at the hearing will be a decision made between her and her attorney," stated the district attorney's office.
Joey Buttitta, a representative for the prosecutors, indicated that Spears would likely be offered the option to plead guilty to a lesser charge of reckless driving.
Such an arrangement typically involves twelve months of probation, mandatory completion of a DUI education class, and the payment of associated fines.
A representative for the singer informed the BBC that "Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney's life."
While the case has drawn significant public attention, legal experts note that jail time is highly unlikely given the lack of injuries or prior history of similar offences in her record.
