Tara Lipinski shares 'devastating' pregnancy loss in surrogacy journey for second child
Lipinski has been trying to expand her family after welcoming daughter Georgie via surrogate in 2023
Tara Lipinski has shared that her surrogate experienced a devastating pregnancy loss during the second trimester, opening up about the emotional toll of her ongoing journey to grow her family.
The 43-year-old Olympic figure skating champion revealed the news in an emotional Instagram post on Friday, May 1, just hours after confirming in a Today interview with Maria Shriver that she and her husband, Todd Kapostasy, were continuing efforts to welcome a second child via surrogacy.
“I didn’t think I was ready to share this yet,” Lipinski wrote. “A few months ago, we lost our baby in the second trimester.”
She added that the couple has now been on a second surrogacy journey for two years, describing a long and difficult process that has included multiple setbacks.
“Our first surrogate, who carried Georgie, wasn’t medically cleared to proceed with our sibling journey,” she explained, referring to the couple’s daughter, Georgie, who was born via surrogate in October 2023. “I grieved that ending and we started over.”
Lipinski detailed a series of challenges, including a failed embryo transfer, delays in finding a new surrogate, and medical complications along the way. She described the latest loss as particularly painful.
“A second trimester loss was devastating,” she wrote. “Something new to add to the long list of heartbreaks we’ve endured on this fertility journey.”
The athlete said the experience has left a lasting emotional impact, calling it “another memory that will be hard to erase,” and reflecting on the difficulty of navigating loss at that stage of pregnancy.
“That appointment will be etched in my mind forever,” she added, while also expressing compassion for others who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss.
“My heart goes out to all the people who have experienced miscarriage, baby loss and stillbirth. You are warriors,” Lipinski wrote.
Lipinski has been open about her fertility struggles over the years, including multiple IVF attempts, egg retrievals, and surgeries related to endometriosis.
She previously shared that she underwent several D&Cs and ultimately required major surgery before turning to surrogacy.
Despite the recent setback, she has continued to express hope about expanding her family. In May 2025, she said she and Kapostasy were beginning the process of trying for a sibling for Georgie, though she acknowledged the uncertainty that comes with it.
