'Michael' has now crossed $300 million worldwide and is on track to surpass $400 million
The summer box office is off to a strong start, with The Devil Wears Prada 2 leading the weekend charts and Lionsgate’s Michael continuing its impressive global run.
According to early industry estimates, The Devil Wears Prada 2 earned $33 million on its opening day from 4,150 North American theaters, including $10 million from preview screenings.
The highly anticipated sequel is now projected to debut with $80.5 million domestically, placing it among the season’s strongest launches and meeting the upper range of pre-release forecasts.
Released by 20th Century Studios, the sequel reunites original stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci.
Audience reception has also been favorable, with the film earning an A- CinemaScore and strong audience ratings, suggesting sustained momentum in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, Michael continues to outperform expectations in its second weekend. The Michael biopic pulled in $14.4 million on its second Friday and is projected to collect $51 million over the weekend, a modest 48 percent drop from its massive $97 million opening.
The film has now crossed $300 million worldwide and is on track to surpass $400 million by Sunday, making it one of the year’s biggest theatrical successes.
It has also overtaken Elvis to become the second-highest-grossing music biopic globally.
Elsewhere, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary continued to hold steady, adding to what analysts say is a much-needed boost for the summer movie season.
