Meghan Markle makes surprise solo appearance in Chicago for godson ceremony
Meghan Markle was seen at a Chicago cathedral celebrating her college friend's child
The Duchess of Sussex made a rare solo appearance in Chicago on Saturday, to attend the First Communion of her godson.
Meghan Markle, 44, was spotted at the Holy Name Cathedral, where she joined guests to commemorate the religious milestone of a child belonging to a close friend from her university days.
Reporter Natalie Martinez shared a photograph on X depicting the Duchess dressed in an elegant beige turtleneck, smiling as she watched the children process through the historic aisle.
PEOPLE magazine confirmed that the Duchess travelled alone for the occasion, representing a meaningful return to the city where she studied at Northwestern University.
Despite her global profile, Meghan maintained a low-key presence at the ceremony. A source noted that she arrived early at the cathedral and "waited with other families and friends in the pews," opting not to use a separate entrance or request any special accommodations.
Following the service, the Duchess reportedly returned to her home in Montecito, California, to prepare for upcoming family celebrations.
This private visit occurred just days before her eldest son, Prince Archie, celebrates his seventh birthday on May 6. Last year, Meghan marked the occasion by releasing a poignant photograph of Archie looking out at the ocean, accompanied by the caption: "Our son. Our sun."
Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, 41, continue to raise Archie and his younger sister, four-year-old Princess Lilibet, in their California residence, having transitioned away from their roles as senior working members of the Royal Family in 2020 to focus on philanthropic ventures and private life.
