Secret Service agents shoot armed suspect on National Mall in Washington
Suspect allegedly fired at Secret Service officers before they returned fire on Monday
An individual was shot during a gunfire exchange with Secret Service agents on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Plainclothes agents initially spotted the "imprint" of a weapon on the suspect at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
They promptly contacted uniformed officers before the incident unfolded at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue.
"An armed confrontation ensued, resulting in one adult male being shot multiple times by Secret Service Police officers," Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn tells PEOPLE.
A firearm was recovered at the scene, and the suspect received treatment at a nearby hospital. Tragically, a juvenile sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being struck "as a result of the suspect shooting Secret Service officers."
Although the White House North Lawn was briefly evacuated, the suspect never entered the grounds. "President Trump was not in any danger, and there currently is no known nexus between the incident and the White House," Quinn adds.
Officers were not harmed during the exchange, which occurred shortly after Vice President JD Vance's motorcade passed the area.
When asked if the shooting targeted the president, Quinn said, "I'm not going to guess on that," noting that they will continue to investigate.
"This shooting illustrates the dangers our special agents and Secret Service police officers face every day," Quinn tells PEOPLE.
This event underscores the heightened security protocols currently in place around the capital's federal landmarks.
The Secret Service continues to maintain 24-hour patrols to secure the complex against potential threats and ongoing safety concerns within the District.
