Meryl Streep skips fashion’s biggest night as invitations go unanswered
The Oscar-winning actress repeatedly turned down invites to the Met Gala, calling it 'not her scene'
Meryl Streep has long been a notable absence from the Met Gala — and according to her representative, that’s unlikely to change.
The Oscar-winning actress, 76, has been invited to fashion’s biggest night for years but has consistently declined to attend, with her spokesperson confirming that the high-profile event “has never quite been her scene.”
“While she appreciates Vogue, Anna Wintour, and her incredible imagination and stamina — it has never quite been her scene,” the rep said.
Streep’s absence is particularly notable given her connection to the fashion world through her iconic role as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada and its upcoming sequel.
The character is widely believed to be inspired by Wintour, though Streep has previously emphasized that her portrayal was entirely her own creation.
“I was not interested in replicating her; I wanted to make my own person,” Streep said in a recent interview, adding that her version of Miranda has evolved independently over time.
Despite distancing her character from the real-life editor, the actress has spoken warmly about Wintour, describing her as “very witty” and praising her sense of personal integrity in an era of constant public exposure.
Streep, who reprises her role in The Devil Wears Prada 2 alongside Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway, remains one of Hollywood’s most respected performers — even as she once feared her career might fade with age.
Reflecting on earlier concerns, the actress previously admitted she believed her opportunities would diminish after turning 40, citing industry trends at the time.
“I thought each movie would be my last,” she said, noting that many women in the industry faced limited roles beyond that age.
