Jerry O’Connell reveals his full birth name as mother shares childhood details on live TV
The actor’s mother, Linda O’Connell, shared details of his unusual legal name
Jerry O’Connell has revealed that his full legal birth name is Michael Jeremiah Witkowski O’Connell, after his mother, Linda O’Connell, lifted the lid on the family detail during a live television appearance.
The revelation came during a Mother’s Day special episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, where the 52-year-old actor appeared alongside his mother.
While discussing family history and childhood memories, Linda casually disclosed her son’s full name, surprising viewers and prompting lighthearted reactions on set.
Linda explained that the name “Jeremiah” runs in the family, noting it is shared with O’Connell’s grandfather and a close relative.
She added that “Witkowski” comes from her own maiden name, giving context to the actor’s unusually long legal name.
Despite the formal name reveal, O’Connell made it clear he has always identified simply as “Jerry.”
Joking about the discovery, he said he never felt like a “Michael,” adding that the shorter name has always suited him better in both personal and professional life.
The conversation also turned nostalgic as Linda reflected on her son’s energetic personality as a child.
She described him as talkative, restless, and constantly engaged in school activities, often drawing attention for always raising his hand and speaking up in class.
O’Connell interjected with humor, joking that his mother’s description was essentially “code for annoying,” before acknowledging that today such behavior would likely be labeled differently.
The actor, known for roles in Stand By Me, Scream 2, and Jerry Maguire, has long been open about his close relationship with his mother.
Linda also shared past stories of defending her son during his early acting career, particularly when he was teased about his childhood fame.
