LeBron James plans family talks before deciding on possible NBA retirement

As retirement speculation continues to swirl around LeBron James, the basketball icon says he still has no clear answer about what comes next following the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff elimination.

Speaking after the Lakers’ 115-110 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 on Monday night, James admitted he remains uncertain about whether he will return for another NBA season.

“I don’t know what the future holds,” the 41-year-old said after the game, adding that he plans to spend time with his family before making any major decision about his career.

James explained that he intends to “recalibrate” with his family and reflect on the season before publicly announcing his next move.

“Nobody has any idea what the future holds, and I don’t either,” James said, according to reports from the Associated Press.

“I’ll take time to recalibrate and look over the season and see what’s best for my future, and when I get to that point, everyone will know.”

The comments quickly reignited retirement rumors surrounding the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, whose future has been the subject of ongoing speculation in recent years.

If James ultimately decides to continue playing, questions also remain about where he could suit up next season.

According to reports, the four-time NBA champion is expected to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 campaign.

James earned $52.6 million this season, and a move involving a reduced salary elsewhere would mark the first pay cut of his professional career.

This is not the first time James has openly discussed uncertainty about retirement. Following the Lakers’ playoff exit to the Minnesota Timberwolves last year, he similarly admitted he was unsure how much longer he wanted to continue playing.

“I don’t have an answer to that,” James previously said while discussing his future. “Something I’ll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and kind of just talk through it and see what happens.”

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, James continued to deliver on the court during his 23rd NBA season.

In what could potentially become the final game of his career, the superstar finished with 24 points and 12 rebounds in the Lakers’ season-ending defeat.
