Mary Bonnet steps away from 'Selling Sunset' ahead of season 10 shake-up
Bonnet also criticized season 9 editing, saying it misrepresented her on screen
Mary Bonnet has confirmed she is leaving Selling Sunset, saying her decision stems from dissatisfaction with the reality series’ creative direction and what she describes as increasingly negative storytelling.
The 45-year-old has been a central figure on the Netflix hit since its debut in 2019, which follows luxury real estate agents at The Oppenheim Group in Los Angeles.
Her departure comes ahead of season 10, following earlier reports that she would not be returning alongside several other cast members.
Speaking to People, Bonnet said she felt the show had moved away from its original concept. “At the end of season 9, you can see that I’m not okay with the direction that the office is going, that the show is going,” she said.
“I signed up for the show, I thought it was gonna be woman empowerment. I thought it was going to be a very positive thing for women and for the real estate industry and I think it’s kind of taken a turn from that,” she added.
Bonnet also criticized what she called “extremely unfair” editing in the most recent season, claiming it distorted her portrayal on screen.
She said the way her storyline was presented made her appear as though she was “just overreacting the whole season.”
“There was so much taken of our context,” she explained. “It painted a picture that I think is extremely damaging and I’m just not gonna be involved in that.”
While stepping away from the show, Bonnet hinted she could still appear in future installments. She also clarified that she will continue her role as vice president of The Oppenheim Group, despite leaving the reality series.
“My job is still the same, and the market is pretty slow right now,” she said, adding that the change in schedule may allow her to focus on other professional projects.
Reports earlier this year suggested multiple cast members would not be returning for season 10, including Emma Hernan, Chelsea Lazkani, and Sandra Vergara.
Following those reports, Chrishell Stause also confirmed her departure, telling Bustle she stepped away for mental health reasons and no longer needed the show financially.
Netflix has yet to officially confirm the full cast lineup for the upcoming season.
