Mandy Moore opens up about 'cool kid' set life during filming of Saved
The actress recalls feeling like part of a 'cool kid' group alongside her young co-stars
Mandy Moore has opened up about her time filming the 2004 teen comedy Saved, revealing she and her young co-stars occasionally engaged in underage drinking — and naming Macaulay Culkin as the one who introduced them to a cocktail that became a set favorite.
The 42-year-old actress and singer appeared on Evan Ross Katz’s podcast Shut Up Evan, where she reflected on working alongside a group of rising young actors, including Jena Malone, Heather Matarazzo, and Culkin.
“I felt like a cool kid,” Moore said, describing how she was excited to be part of what she called a group of “really incredible young actors” making bold creative choices in Hollywood at the time.
Moore admitted that during filming, there were moments of underage drinking among the cast, despite her being below Canada’s legal drinking age of 19 at the time.
“I do remember a little bit of underage drinking,” she said, adding that she rationalized it at the time. “As it happened, I was like, ‘Look, I didn’t go to high school.’ I was 18.”
She went on to say that Culkin, who was legally old enough to drink, introduced the group to White Russians — a cocktail made with vodka, coffee liqueur, and cream.
“I think it was Macaulay that introduced me and all of us to a White Russian,” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Milk and alcohol? This is made for me, I love this!’”
Despite the drinking, Moore emphasized that the atmosphere on set remained lighthearted and harmless.
