Joe Negri, ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ star and jazz guitarist, dies at 99
The jazz guitarist was confirmed dead on May 30, 2026, from natural causes
American jazz guitarist and television figure Joe Negri, best known to generations of viewers as “Handyman Negri” on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, has died just days before his 100th birthday.
Negri passed away on May 30, 2026, at the age of 99. His death was confirmed by Fred Rogers Productions, with his family later telling Pittsburgh outlet TribLive that he died of natural causes.
Widely remembered for his gentle presence on the iconic children’s program, Negri became a familiar face to audiences through his role as Handyman, a character who helped bring warmth and everyday life lessons to the beloved series hosted by Fred Rogers.
Despite his on-screen persona, Negri often joked that he was not actually handy in real life.
In a past interview with KDKA-TV, he admitted he struggled with basic repairs, once saying, “I can’t even hammer a nail.” Fred Rogers reportedly reassured him by reminding him that the show’s world was built on imagination and make-believe.
Beyond television, Negri was deeply respected in the world of jazz music. A talented guitarist, he built a long and influential career performing with some of the industry’s most celebrated names, including Wynton Marsalis, Johnny Costa and Yo-Yo Ma. He also ran Negri’s Music Shop, further cementing his legacy in Pittsburgh’s music scene.
Music remained at the center of his life from an early age. Negri once shared that his passion began when he was just three years old, when his father placed a ukulele in his hands and began teaching him songs.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow musicians, many remembering him not only as a performer but as a cultural figure who helped shape childhood memories and inspired generations through both music and television.
