IMAX 70mm tickets for 'The Odyssey' resold at extreme prices ahead of July release
The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters nationwide on July 17
Hollywood's enthusiasm for The Odyssey has quickly spilled into the resale market, with tickets for the highly anticipated release being listed on eBay for as much as $10,000 just one day after going on sale.
Tickets for the film, which opened for advance purchase on Thursday, June 4, have been met with intense demand and widespread technical strain on major ticketing platforms, including AMC Theatres’ app and website.
Users reportedly faced long waiting times, some stretching to an hour or more, before being able to access available seats.
The surge in demand has since extended beyond official outlets, with dozens of second-hand listings appearing online.
As of Friday, June 5, IMAX 70mm tickets—among the most premium and limited formats for the film—were being resold at heavily inflated prices. Listings include two tickets for an AMC Lincoln Square screening in New York City priced at $1,099, a 12-ticket bundle in Georgia listed for $10,000, and another four-ticket listing at the same New York location priced at $2,000 total.
The extreme resale activity reflects the unusually high anticipation surrounding the film, which is set for theatrical release on July 17.
The project is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland as Telemachus and Zendaya as Athena.
The film is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem The Odyssey, following Odysseus’ long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, while his wife Penelope faces pressure from suitors during his absence.
The ensemble cast also includes Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, and John Leguizamo.
The demand surge also highlights Christopher Nolan’s consistent track record of driving box office frenzy.
His previous film Oppenheimer (2023) became a global cultural phenomenon alongside Barbie, contributing to record-breaking theater attendance and ultimately grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide while winning multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
With anticipation continuing to build, The Odyssey is already shaping up to be one of the most closely watched theatrical releases of 2026, both for its scale and its unprecedented IMAX 70mm presentation strategy.
The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters nationwide on July 17.
