Anya Taylor-Joy credits multinational upbringing for shaping her Hollywood success
The actress says her upbringing across the U.S., Argentina, and the U.K. helped shape her adaptability
Anya Taylor-Joy has reflected on her unusual upbringing, saying her childhood spent moving between countries left her feeling isolated at times but ultimately helped shape her career in acting.
In a recent interview with L’Officiel magazine, the actress said frequently relocating during her early years made it difficult for her to feel a sense of belonging.
“It was difficult for little me,” she said, describing the emotional challenges of growing up across different cultures.
The actress was born in the United States, raised in Buenos Aires, and later moved to the United Kingdom at the age of six. She said that the experience of constant transition often made her feel like an outsider, as she struggled to define where she truly belonged.
Looking back, however, she now views that instability differently, saying it has helped her adapt to a career built on change and transformation.
“But now I look at it with so much love, because I just think it perfectly set me up to live this kind of transient life,” she said, adding that she has always felt naturally “nomadic.”
She also shared that her love of travel and movement continues into adulthood, noting that she enjoys exploring new places whenever her schedule allows.
The Anya Taylor-Joy star has previously spoken about struggling with identity as a child, recalling in earlier interviews that she was often defined differently depending on where she lived—“the Argentine girl in England” or “the English girl in America.”
At one point, she even resisted learning English after moving to the UK, hoping her family would eventually return to Argentina, she revealed in past remarks.
Despite those early challenges, she said the experience ultimately strengthened her ability to connect with a wide range of characters in her acting career, allowing her to step into very different roles with ease.
Away from her professional life, Taylor-Joy has kept her marriage to musician and actor Malcolm McRae largely private, with the couple maintaining a low-profile relationship in recent years.
