‘The Social Reckoning’ trailer reveals Jeremy Strong as Zuckerberg
Sony Pictures has unveiled the first trailer for 'The Social Reckoning', Aaron Sorkin’s long-awaited follow-up to 'The Social Network'
Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for The Social Reckoning, the long-awaited follow-up to the 2010 hit The Social Network, offering audiences a glimpse into the next chapter of Facebook's story and the controversies that followed its meteoric rise.
The film, which arrives 16 years after the Oscar-winning original, shifts its focus from Facebook's founding years to the whistleblower revelations that emerged as the platform evolved into one of the world's most influential technology companies. The story centers on former Facebook engineer Frances Haugen, portrayed by Mikey Madison, and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, whose reporting exposed internal company research and decision-making processes.
Jeremy Strong steps into the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, taking over from Jesse Eisenberg, who earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal in the original film. The cast also includes Bill Burr in an undisclosed role.
Aaron Sorkin returns to the franchise as both writer and director, expanding his involvement after winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Social Network. According to the film's synopsis, The Social Reckoning chronicles the events surrounding "The Facebook Files," the Wall Street Journal's 2021 investigative series that examined Facebook's impact on teenage users and its role in the spread of misinformation and politically charged content.
The trailer's debut follows its presentation at CinemaCon, where Sorkin explained the motivation behind revisiting the story. "There isn't a life that Facebook's algorithm hasn't touched, and that influence has shaped everything," he said. "So it's time to say more."
The original The Social Network became both a critical and commercial success upon its release, grossing $226 million worldwide and earning eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The film ultimately won three Oscars and remains one of Hollywood's most acclaimed examinations of the technology industry.
Produced by Sorkin alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser, The Social Reckoning is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Oct. 9. With renewed attention on the influence of social media platforms, the sequel aims to revisit one of the most consequential technology stories of the modern era.
