Prince William's football habits signal shift in royal protocol
King Charles and Prince William skip the royal box to watch football normally
Prince William is breaking with longstanding royal tradition by watching football as an ordinary fan — a sharp departure from King Charles and previous monarchs who relied on designated royal watch boxes.
Grant Harrold, Former Royal Butler, spoke to OLBG about the Prince of Wales's relaxed approach to attending football matches. Harrold, who served in the royal household, outlined the strict conduct expected of those entering a royal box.
"When I was there, there were strict protocols we were given if we went into a royal box or an area with the royals, of how you could behave, what you could wear, what you could say, what you could do," Harrold said.
A sign of things to come
Harrold noted that William's behaviour at football stands in clear contrast to how previous members of the Royal Family conducted themselves in public. His grandmother, grandfather, and even his father never attended sporting events in the same informal manner.
"The fact that he is acting like any other football fan, which we would have never seen his grandmother or grandfather do, or even his father, shows how he is relaxing things and a sign of things to come," he added.
For William as a "normal fan," Harrold said, "protocol goes out the window."
Future King, different approach
William, who is an avid football supporter, is next in line to the throne following King Charles. His willingness to set aside traditional royal customs at public events is being seen as an early indicator of the kind of monarch he intends to be.
