'Emergency!' actor Randolph Mantooth dies aged 80
TV icon rises to fame as paramedic Johnny Gage on 'Emergency!'
Randolph Mantooth, the actor best known for playing firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage on NBC's Emergency!, has died at the age of 80 after years of declining health.
Mantooth died on July 9 at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, his brother Donald Mantooth confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. According to his brother, the actor had "been ill for a number of years and kept getting thinner and thinner."
Randolph Mantooth rose to fame with Emergency!
Mantooth became a household name after starring as Johnny Gage in Emergency!, which aired for five seasons in the 1970s. His portrayal of the firefighter-paramedic introduced millions of viewers to the world of emergency medical services and remains his most recognised role.
Before landing the part, Mantooth appeared in television series including Adam-12, McCloud, Alias Smith and Jones and Marcus Welby, M.D.
Career spanned television, soaps and films
Born in California after his family settled in the Santa Barbara area, Mantooth discovered acting through school plays. He later attended Santa Barbara City College before earning a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
His performance in the stage production Philadelphia, Here I Come attracted the attention of a Universal talent agent, helping launch his professional acting career.
Following Emergency!, Mantooth continued working across television and film for decades. He portrayed Clay Alden and later Alex Masters on Loving, and also appeared in General Hospital, One Life to Live and As the World Turns.
His film credits included Agent Red, Price to Pay, He Was a Quiet Man, Bold Native and Killer Holiday.
Mantooth's death marks the loss of one of television's most recognisable stars, whose work on Emergency! helped popularise the role of paramedics and left a lasting impact on generations of viewers.
