Prince William praises England squad after World Cup exit
Prince William shared a supportive message praising England after a painful World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina
The Prince of Wales expressed his total devastation following the England football team's exit from the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday evening. Prince William praised the national squad as the most complete tournament side the country has produced, despite suffering a late collapse against holders Argentina in Atlanta.
The Daily Mail reported that the royal, who serves as the patron of the Football Association, published a personal message on social media shortly after the final whistle. Writing directly to the players, he expressed immense pride in their efforts throughout the competition and urged them to hold their heads high. He noted that the fight and belief shown by the squad had inspired the entire nation during an incredible tournament run.
The highly anticipated fixture turned into heartbreak for manager Thomas Tuchel's side at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon had initially given England the lead ten minutes into the second half, converting a low cross from teammate Morgan Rogers. The opening goal sparked wild celebrations among the travelling British supporters as England closed in on their first World Cup final appearance in sixty years.
However, the reigning world champions launched a relentless late response in the closing minutes of the game. Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez scored the equaliser for Argentina in the 85th minute, beating goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a powerful strike from outside the penalty area. Just seven minutes later, veteran captain Lionel Messi delivered a precise cross to set up substitute Lautaro Martinez, who headed home an unmarked winner in the 92nd minute.
The result means England will now contest the third-place playoff match against France in Miami on Saturday. Meanwhile, Argentina progress to the final on Sunday in New Jersey, where they will face Spain in a bid to successfully retain their global crown.
