Prince William praises England despite painful World Cup defeat

Prince William has shared his disappointment following England's heartbreaking exit from the FIFA World Cup, praising the team's determination while admitting he was "gutted" by the result.

England's hopes of reaching the final came to an end on Wednesday, July 15, after a 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals.

Shortly after the final whistle, the Prince of Wales, who serves as patron of the Football Association (FA), posted a heartfelt message on X, applauding the squad's performance throughout the tournament.

"Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you," William wrote.

"Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high."

Despite the loss, William praised the players for their resilience and the inspiration they provided to supporters during England's World Cup campaign.

Argentina will now face Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, while England will take on France in the third-place playoff on Saturday, July 18.

Before the semi-final, William had revealed he planned to travel to the United States if England advanced to the championship match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Speaking on the New Heights podcast with brothers Jason and Travis Kelce, the prince said his definition of a successful World Cup for England was simple: winning the tournament.

When asked whether he would "cross the pond" if England reached the final, William replied, "Definitely. If we're in the final."

The Prince of Wales also praised this year's World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, describing it as a "brilliant" tournament that has been well organised.

During the same podcast appearance, William also opened up about his lifelong love of football and his support for Aston Villa, revealing that his passion for the sport did not come from his father, King Charles.

"My father hates football," William said, explaining that his enthusiasm for the game developed after childhood friends took him to his first football match.
