Georgia grandmother charged over toddler grandson's drowning

Georgia grandmother has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty after police alleged she failed to properly supervise her two-year-old grandson, who drowned in an apartment complex swimming pool last month.

Toddler died after pool incident

According to Roswell police, emergency responders were called to the clubhouse pool at the Lake House at Martin's Landing apartment complex on the evening of June 21 following reports of a drowning.

When officers arrived, bystanders were performing CPR on two-year-old Axel Delgado. He was taken to hospital but died the following day.

The toddler had been attending a social gathering with family at the apartment complex's Harbor Landing clubhouse pool.

Police cite surveillance footage

Following an investigation that included reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, detectives concluded that Emelisa Paz-Santos, 44, "failed to provide adequate care and supervision" for the child, resulting in his drowning, according to police.

She was charged with involuntary manslaughter and second-degree cruelty to children.

Surrendered to authorities

Paz-Santos surrendered to police on July 14, a day before the charges were formally filed.

Court records show her bond was set at $35,000 for the involuntary manslaughter charge and $5,000 for the child cruelty charge. Jail records also indicate she is being held under an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer.

The toddler's death prompted an outpouring of support from members of the local community, who expressed condolences to his family following the tragedy.
