Anne Hathaway shares hopeful update on long-awaited 'Princess Diaries 3'
The release date remains unknown, as the actress says the team behind 'Princess Diaries 3' feels confident
Anne Hathaway has reassured fans that The Princess Diaries 3 is still moving forward, revealing the long-awaited sequel found new momentum after the creative team decided to start over with a fresh script.
Speaking during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, the Oscar-winning actress said the project recently reached a major turning point after the filmmakers abandoned an earlier version of the screenplay.
“I think we had a story breakthrough,” Hathaway shared. “We kind of had to start over with this new direction... but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”
The actress, who returns as Mia Thermopolis, said the rewrite was necessary to ensure the sequel lived up to fans' expectations.
While production is now heading in the right direction, she confirmed there is still no filming schedule or release date.
Hathaway also revealed that her pregnancy with her third child has delayed plans to begin production.
“I’m busy making baby number three,” she said, explaining that it has taken priority over finalizing the film's shooting timetable.
The original Princess Diaries debuted in 2001 and launched Hathaway's Hollywood career, followed by The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement in 2004. Both films were directed by the late Garry Marshall.
Disney officially announced the third installment in 2024, with Joy Ride filmmaker Adele Lim attached to direct.
Although no additional cast members have been confirmed, Julie Andrews has previously said she would be happy to return as Queen Clarisse if the opportunity arises.
Producer Debra Martin Chase also recently expressed optimism that the beloved franchise is finally moving closer to becoming a reality.
