Missing Virginia giraffes found safe following criminal investigation

Authorities located two missing Virginia giraffes safely after they disappeared in 2025, officials confirmed. The animals have now been moved to a professional facility specialising in giraffe care.

PEOPLE reported that the Virginia Attorney General’s Office secured the calves, which were connected to the Natural Bridge Zoo. Officials did not disclose details regarding how or where the animals were found, citing an active criminal investigation into the matter. The Attorney General’s Office stated that the outcome reflects its commitment to public safety, community protection, and holding lawbreakers accountable.

The recovery follows a history of legal troubles surrounding the Natural Bridge Zoo. Animal rights organisation PETA stated that the calves vanished during an ongoing legal battle involving the facility. PETA teamed up with actress Alicia Silverstone to offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to the return of the missing animals.

The zoo previously faced severe scrutiny from state law enforcement over its treatment of animals. In 2023, state authorities confiscated approximately 100 animals from the property due to unsanitary living conditions. Investigators noted that sick animals were denied necessary veterinary care, whilst dozens of deceased animal bodies and parts were discovered on the site.

Law enforcement agencies are continuing to investigate the situation surrounding the animals' initial disappearance.
