Woman, 20, fatally shot through bedroom window while sleeping at home

20-year-old mother was fatally shot while sleeping beside her 1-year-old daughter after a bullet reportedly tore through the bedroom window of their Los Angeles home, authorities and local reports said.

Mother identified by medical examiner

Maria Barrios Ventura was asleep in a bedroom at a home on the 400 block of West 103rd Street in the Vermont Vista neighbourhood at about 3:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 19, when she was struck by a bullet, according to CBS News and KTLA.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified Ventura as the victim in an online report.

Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the home and found Ventura suffering from gunshot wounds, NBC Los Angeles reported. Police sources told the outlet she had been shot in the head.

Despite efforts by paramedics, Ventura was pronounced dead at the scene, KTLA reported.

Boyfriend says family was sleeping together

Ventura's boyfriend, Omar Misael, told NBC Los Angeles that the couple and their 1-year-old daughter had been sleeping in the same bed when the shooting happened.

While investigators are looking into whether the shooting was targeted, Misael told the outlet that "a stray bullet passed through here and struck my partner, and another seven shots were fired and hit around here."

He added that Ventura died about 10 minutes later.

NBC Los Angeles also reported that a nearby resident, Jose Chavez, said gunfire struck his property.

"It hit my car, it hit the window, it hit a friend," Chavez told the station. "And unfortunately, she died."

Family launches fundraiser

In a GoFundMe campaign, Ventura's aunt, Liliana Lopez, described the shooting as a "sudden and heartbreaking event" that had devastated the family.

She said donations would help cover funeral expenses, return Ventura's body to her family in Guatemala and support her 1-year-old daughter.

Lopez added that Ventura's relatives all live in Guatemala, leaving little local support for the child.

PEOPLE said it had contacted the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department for comment.
