Jimmy Kimmel offers show to Stephen Colbert following 'Late Show' cancellation

Jimmy Kimmel revealed that he invited Stephen Colbert to guest-host Jimmy Kimmel Live during his summer hiatus following the end of The Late Show. However, Colbert declined the offer, saying he felt it was "premature."

Speaking to Variety, Kimmel said he told Colbert the invitation would remain open whenever he was ready.

"Anytime you want to host, it doesn't matter if it's the summer, I'll gladly step aside," Kimmel recalled telling his fellow late-night host.

Kimmel jokes about Late Show cancellation

During the interview, Kimmel also took a swipe at CBS over its decision to end The Late Show.

"The ratings are very strong, which we are very grateful to CBS for their wisdom," Kimmel said sarcastically while discussing the show's cancellation.

CBS previously maintained that ending The Late Show was "purely a financial decision" amid challenges facing late-night television. However, the move sparked widespread debate, with critics questioning whether politics played a role.

Colbert's exit sparked industry reaction

Colbert's departure prompted support from several prominent figures in late-night television.

Former Late Show host David Letterman returned for one of Colbert's final episodes, criticising the situation while praising his successor's work on the programme.

Meanwhile, Kimmel has continued to publicly back Colbert, offering him a platform on Jimmy Kimmel Live whenever he chooses to return.

Rosie O'Donnell among upcoming guest hosts

While Colbert passed on the invitation, Jimmy Kimmel Live will continue featuring guest hosts during Kimmel's summer break.

Rosie O'Donnell is set to host the programme for one week beginning on Aug. 17.
