Snapchat Now Playing feature connects Spotify tracks to Snap Map

Snapchat launched its new Snapchat Now Playing feature on Snap Map, transforming its interactive map into a real-time soundtrack for connected friends. The tool pairs directly with external music streaming services, beginning with Spotify, to display a user’s currently playing song alongside their location on the map.

TechCrunch reported that the new functionality displays only active audio playback while explicitly keeping past listening history and previously played tracks private. Music sharing remains active only if a user opens the Snapchat application within 24 hours of their previous session. To give individuals greater control over who sees their music, the platform allows users to manually switch off audio sharing for three hours, 24 hours, or indefinitely.

In addition to map sharing, the Snapchat Now Playing feature integrates directly with Spotlight, Snapchat’s short-form video platform. This connection makes it possible for users to instantly save any song discovered within a Spotlight video directly to their connected Spotify account. Snapchat Head of Music Manny Adler explained that music is one of the most personal ways people express themselves, noting that it becomes even more meaningful when bringing friends closer together. Adler added that the tool helps users share the soundtrack to their day while discovering new tracks through existing contacts.

The launch reflects a wider movement across social media platforms toward audio-focused features and shared listening experiences. TikTok currently permits users to share and save audio clips from various streaming services, while Instagram highlights listening behaviour through Notes placed directly above user direct message inboxes. Spotify has also introduced dedicated features that allow direct listening shares between friends.

The Snapchat Now Playing feature continues this industry trend by embedding music discovery into Snap Map. Originally introduced in 2017 as a basic friend-location service, Snap Map has continually evolved into a multi-purpose social space and now boasts more than 450 million monthly active users.
