India becomes fastest growing ChatGPT market globally
OpenAI's popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT has been gaining traction in India, with the country emerging as one of the fastest growing AI markets.
However, despite this growth, recent data has suggested that the ChatGPT parent company might be struggling to generate significant revenue from its Indian user base.
According to a renowned analytical firm SensorTower, users in India have spent only $8 million on ChatGPT subscriptions through in-app purchases since 2023.
It should be noted that this is a fraction of the $330 million spent by US users on ChatGPT in-app during the same period.
One possible reason for this gap is the lack of local pricing for India, with OpenAI's cheapest ChatGPT plan costing $20 per month.
Despite the low revenue, the largest South Asian country might still become a major growth driver for OpenAI.
Additionally, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has expressed a desire to become a multi-billion-user platform, and tapping into India's vast internet user base of over 950 million could help achieve this goal.
The recent release of the Studio-Ghibli-style image generator in ChatGPT has also contributed to its growth, with users going viral for its ability to create realistic Ghibli-style art.
Moreover, the company is exploring an alliance with Reliance Jio, one of India's largest mobile carriers, to expand its reach.
