Winona Ryder shares her unapologetic take about controversial film ‘Heathers’
Hollywood icon Winona Ryder reveals she lost work thanks to her work in 1988’s ‘Heathers’

Winona Ryder has been a bonafide Hollywood mainstay for decades, but even she has hit a few bumps along the road.
The actress who found new success starring on Netflix’s hugely popular Stranger Things, has now opened up about which part almost tanked her career before it even took off.
Her appearance in the cult favourite, dark teen comedy Heathers, is one that the Oscar-nominated actress was recommended against accepting.
“I was told I was never gonna work again if I did ‘Heathers’,” she told Elle UK, while doing their latest cover story.
The Edward Scissorhands actress further revealed that she “did lose a job” after doing the controversial 1988 film.
“They thought it was making fun of teen suicide. They were deeply offended and, yeah, they revoked the offer,” she recalled about the time she was initially cast in 1990’s The Freshman, which starred Marlon Brando and Matthew Broderick.
To note, Heathers was a scandalous release for various reasons; among them being the inclusion of teen murderers, sexual elements, and themes which amounted to teenage suicide and school shootings.
Nevertheless, the 53-year-old Hollywood icon still stands by her choice and disclosed that the film is even one of her favourite things to watch when it comes on TV.
“I had to stand my ground. I wasn’t gonna apologise. I never turn off ‘Heathers’ if it’s on. I know it basically by heart,” she stated.
Winona Ryder is set to reprise her role as Joyce Byers in the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which begins streaming on Netflix, on November 26.
