70 years of history: Queen Elizabeth II’s most defining events
Let’s take a trip down memory lane to revisit Queen Elizabeth II’s landmark moments

Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, spanning seven decades, was marked by historical moments, national challenges, and global milestones.
Let’s revisit some of the defining events that shaped her time on the throne:
Coronation
Elizabeth became queen on February 6, 1952 at the age of 25.
Her coronation took place 16 months later and was the first to be broadcast live on television, drawing more than 20 million viewers in the U.K.
“I have in sincerity pledged myself to your service, as so many of you are pledged to mine,” the queen said.
She added, “Throughout all my life and with all my heart I shall strive to be worthy of your trust.”
China visit
In October 1986, Queen Elizabeth made history by becoming the first British monarch ever to travel to China.
The trip is still regarded as one of the most integral tours of her reign and is credited with helping improve relations between the two nations.
Annus horribilis
Elizabeth’s reign had its challenges, but 1992 was one of the hardest years.
That year, three of her children — Princes Charles and Andrew and Princess Anne — saw their marriages collapse.
Adding to the turmoil, a devastating fire broke out at Windsor Castle, one of the queen’s official residences.
To mark 40th year on the throne, Elizabeth remarked that 1992 was “annus horribilis”, which means “horrible year" in Latin.
Death of Diana
The queen faced heavy criticism for her initial response to the death of Princess Diana, Prince Charles’s ex-wife, who was killed at the age of 36 in a car crash.
While the nation mourned, Elizabeth remained silent at Balmoral Castle in Scotland rather than immediately returning to London.
At Diana’s funeral, however, she bowed as the princess’ casket passed and later paid tribute.
“She was an exceptional and gifted human being. In good times and bad, she never lost her capacity to smile and laugh, nor to inspire others with her warmth and kindness,” the monarch said of Diana.
Platinum Jubilee
To mark 70 years on the throne, the Queen’s health was declining, limiting her public appearances.
She attended some events but was absent for others.
“When it comes to how to mark 70 years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow,” Elizabeth said in a statement afterward.
She added, “It really is a first. But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee. While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all.”
