Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remembered Jane Goodall as the couple paid a heartfelt tribute to the late conservationist.

Jane’s trailblazing research will be fondly remembered as it shifted how the public viewed its connection to the animal kingdom.

How did Jane Goodall die?

The Jane Goodall Institute announced on October 1, 2025, that the renowned animal welfare advocate died in Los Angeles of natural causes while on a speaking tour.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s tribute

“Dr. Jane Goodall DBE was a visionary humanitarian, scientist, friend to the planet, and friend to us,” Harry and Meghan said in a statement.

“Her commitment to changing lives extends beyond what the world saw, and also to what we personally felt. She held our son, Archie, when he was first born, and showered love and care to those who were privileged to know her. She will be deeply missed,” they further stated.

Where did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle meet Jane Goodall?

Harry and Jane met in December 2018 when he invited her to Kensington Palace to discuss their mutual concern for the environment.

Later in 2019, Jane visited the Harry and Meghan’s then-home of Frogmore Cottage in Windsor to chat with Harry ahead of the Global Leadership Meeting for the Jane Goodall Institute's Roots & Shoots youth program at Windsor Castle that month.

“Meghan [Markle] came in to listen with Archie,” Jane told the Daily Mail’s Weeknd Magazine.

She added that she couldn't resist the chance to hold their first born, Prince Archie.

"He was very tiny and very sleepy. Not too pleased to be passed from his mummy,” Jane told the outlet.

The viral 'Chimpanzee Greeting'

The following month at the Roots & Shoots meeting, Harry invited Jane for an impromptu dance and reenacted the “Chimpanzee Greeting” she taught him when they first met.

It is worth noting that Jane was known as the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees after spending decades studying them in the wild in Tanzania's Gombe Stream National Park.

Honourable title

Apart from having a special bond with Harry and Meghan, Jane was made a Dame in 2004 by Harry’s father, then-Prince of Wales, now King Charles.

For those unversed, Dame is an honorary title in the U.K. awarded to women, equivalent to a knighthood. Similar to the title Sir, it recognises significant contributions and services.
