Prince William paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend, the renowned zoologist and conservationist Iain Douglas-Hamilton, after his death on December 8.

Passed away at the age of 83, the Scottish aristocrat turned elephant campaigner, was remembered by the Prince of Wales as “a man who dedicated his life to conservation”.

“I am so sad to hear of the passing of Iain Douglas-Hamilton, a man who dedicated his life to conservation, and whose life’s work leaves lasting impact on our appreciation for, and understanding of, elephants,” William wrote on his Instagram story.

“The memories of spending time in Africa with him will remain with me forever,” the tribute continued. “My thoughts go out to Iain’s family, especially his wife Oria and children Saba and Dudu. W”.

While Douglas-Hamilton’s organisation, Save the Elephants, announced his passing with the statement, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, renowned Scottish zoologist and founder & president of Save the Elephants. Iain passed away last night in Nairobi at age 83.”

Back in 2016, Prince William had awarded Iain Douglas-Hamilton with a CBE medal during an investiture ceremony held at Buckingham Palace.
