Brown University shooting: Two dead, nine injured as police search for suspect
Authorities later released footage of a man they believe may be responsible
A peaceful Saturday afternoon at Brown University descended into panic and bloodshed after a gunman opened fire on campus, killing at least two people and critically injuring nine others as students scrambled for safety.
The shooting unfolded at the Barus and Holley building on Hope Street in Providence, Rhode Island, prompting immediate shelter-in-place orders that remained in effect for hours.
As night fell, armed officers flooded the Ivy League campus and pushed into the surrounding affluent neighbourhood, moving through academic buildings, back gardens and front porches in a hunt for the suspect.
According to The Guardian, Providence police deputy chief Timothy O’Hara said investigators were hunting for ‘a male dressed in black’ who fled the scene after the attack. Officers believe the suspect exited the campus building shortly after the shooting.
“We are utilising every resource possible to find this suspect,” O’Hara said, as police continued their sweep late into the night.
Authorities later released footage of a man they believe may be responsible. Some witnesses told police the suspect, thought to be in his 30s, may have been wearing a camouflage mask.
Brown University president Christina Paxson confirmed that 10 of those shot were students, including the two who died. Another person suffered injuries from fragments caused by the gunfire, officials said.
Officials further said the manhunt is still ongoing.
