Elon Musk has hinted that X (formerly Twitter) is preparing to introduce a new system designed to label edited or altered images as “manipulated media,” making the platform the latest social network to address concerns around misleading visuals.

However, details about how the system will work remain unclear, including whether it will apply to images altered using traditional editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop or focus primarily on AI-generated content.

So far, the only indication of the feature comes from a brief and cryptic post by Musk reading “Edited visuals warning,” which accompanied his resharing of an announcement from the anonymous X account DogeDesigner.

The account is frequently used to preview or announce upcoming X features, with Musk often amplifying its posts.

DogeDesigner claimed the new labeling system could make it more difficult for legacy media outlets to circulate misleading images or video clips and suggested the feature represents a new addition to the platform.

Beyond those claims, X has not provided technical or policy explanations for how edited content will be identified or labeled.

Before being acquired by Musk and rebranded as X, Twitter maintained a policy that flagged manipulated, deceptively altered, or fabricated media rather than removing it outright.

That policy applied not only to AI-generated content but also to more traditional edits, including cropping, slowing down footage, overdubbing audio, or altering subtitles, according to former site integrity head Yoel Roth.

It remains uncertain whether X is reviving those standards or introducing new rules to address advances in generative AI.
