Elon Musk explores merger between SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI
Tie-up between SpaceX and xAI could support Musk’s vision of placing data centres in space
Elon Musk is reportedly exploring a potential merger involving three of his companies: SpaceX, Tesla, and artificial intelligence (AI) startup xAI.
According to Bloomberg, the discussions are still in the early stages but could eventually result in one or more of the companies being combined under SpaceX.
Sources familiar with the talks say two main scenarios are being considered. One option would involve a merger between SpaceX and Tesla, while another would see SpaceX combine with xAI, which already owns Musk’s social media platform X.
Reuters reported that a SpaceX-xAI merger could take place ahead of a possible SpaceX initial public offering later this year.
Such a move would bring together a wide range of products and services, including SpaceX’s rockets and Starlink satellite network, xAI’s Grok chatbot, and the X social media platform, under a single corporate structure.
Although executives from SpaceX and xAI have not publicly commented on the reports, recent corporate filings have fueled speculation.
Two new entities, K2 Merger Sub Inc. and K2 Merger Sub 2 LLC, were registered in Nevada on January 21, suggesting preparations for potential restructuring.
Each merger scenario carries strategic advantages. A tie-up between SpaceX and xAI could support Musk’s vision of placing data centers in space, while a SpaceX-Tesla merger could integrate Tesla’s energy storage capabilities into that effort.
Last year, SpaceX agreed to invest $2 billion in xAI, followed by a similar investment from Tesla this week.
xAI acquired X in 2024, while SpaceX remains the most valuable private company in the US, reportedly valued at $800 billion.
