Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder killed in tragic Tesla crash

The University of Colorado is in mourning following the tragic death of quarterback Dominiq Ponder, who died in a single-car accident early on Sunday.

The 23-year-old was driving a 2023 Tesla in Boulder County when he lost control on a curve, striking a guardrail and an electrical pole before the vehicle rolled down an embankment.

First responders sadly pronounced him dead at the scene. While the investigation continues, the Colorado State Patrol has indicated that speed is suspected to have been a factor.

Coach Deion Sanders led the heartfelt tributes on social media, describing Ponder as a "Born Leader" who was deeply respected by his peers.

Sanders wrote: "God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader."

Ponder, a third-year sophomore from Florida, had spent the last two seasons with the Buffaloes after transferring from Bethune-Cookman University.

The tragedy has left the athletic department reeling just as spring practice was due to commence. Athletic director Fernando Lovo shared the collective grief, stating: "The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder."

Offensive coordinator Brennan Marion also expressed his shock, noting that a call from Ponder's father "didn’t feel real."

Teammates have remembered the young quarterback not just for his toughness on the pitch, but for a joyful presence that made everything better. His loss leaves a significant void in the "QB room" and the wider Colorado community.
