An Arkansas father awaiting trial for the second-degree murder of his daughter’s alleged rapist has won the Republican primary for county sheriff.

Aaron Spencer, 37, secured 53.5% of the vote on Tuesday in Lonoke County. He is now set to face Democratic candidate Brian Mitchell Sr. in the autumn general election, provided his legal status remains unchanged.

The charges against Spencer stem from an October 2024 incident in which he allegedly shot and killed 67-year-old Michael Fosler.

Reports state Spencer discovered Fosler with his teenage daughter; at the time, Fosler was out on bond and facing 43 criminal charges involving the girl, including sexual assault.

Reflecting on the case, Spencer stated, “I'm the father who acted to protect his daughter when the system failed.” He argued that his personal fight for justice highlighted systemic failures in law enforcement that he now intends to reform.

Public opinion remains divided. While many residents empathise with his actions, others express concern over a sheriff facing a murder charge.

Local voter Lia Bell told CNN she worried about a law enforcement officer who might be "trigger happy," adding, "I want somebody that’s gonna take the emotion out of it and follow the law."

Spencer has pleaded not guilty, and a new trial date is expected to be set following a hearing later this month. Under Arkansas law, Spencer would be disqualified from serving as sheriff if he is ultimately convicted of the felony charge.
