Family 'heartbroken' as body of missing student Jimmy Gracey is found

The family of James "Jimmy" Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, has confirmed the recovery of his body in the waters off Somorrostro Beach in Barcelona.

Gracey was reported missing on Tuesday, following a night out with friends who were studying abroad. Local authorities discovered his body two days later, shortly after his wallet was reportedly found floating at sea.

In a statement released on Thursday, his family expressed their devastating grief: "Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss."

The student was last seen at approximately 3am on Monday at the beachfront nightclub Shôko. His mother, Therese Marren Gracey, noted that "He was last seen by his friend at Shoko around 3am.

The friend was leaving but Jimmy stayed." Surveillance footage reportedly showed him leaving the venue with an unidentified individual.

While an autopsy will determine the official cause of death, the University of Alabama has joined the family in mourning, stating they are "heartbroken" by the news.

The family noted they "sincerely appreciate the continued support and coordination of the local authorities and the U.S. Consulate" as they work to understand the circumstances.

They also expressed gratitude for the "outpouring of love, support, and prayers from people around the world."

The campus community is currently receiving support as they process the loss of a student whose presence was "deeply felt" across the university.
