How Mary J. Blige survived 'horrifying' clash with a superstar
R&B legend Mary J. Blige has opened up about a crushing encounter with a famous idol
The acclaimed R&B legend Mary J. Blige has shared details of a “horrifying” encounter with a major pop star that left her deeply distressed.
Speaking on the R&B Money podcast, the 55-year-old singer described the moment she finally met an idol she “absolutely loved so much,” only to be met with a series of brutal personal insults.
The unnamed star reportedly targeted both her appearance and her vocal ability during their first meeting.
Reflecting on the exchange, Blige recounted the unsolicited advice she received regarding her signature blonde hair and dark roots.
She stated: “This person goes ‘you really should dye your hair and your roots the same colour as your hair. And you really should learn to sing on key’.”
The singer admitted she was left speechless by the rebuff, as she had entered the situation with immense joy.
“That was f****d up because I was excited to meet this person,” she added. “I ain’t saying no names but I was like ‘let me go see if I’m singing flat or whatever that means’.”
While the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul” refused to identify the individual, the experience clearly left a lasting impression on her early career. Since finding fame in 1992 with her debut album, What’s the 411?, Blige has overcome such industry coldness to become a global icon.
Most recently, she proved her enduring relevance in the music scene by releasing her latest single, “More Than a Lover,” in February, continuing her storied professional journey.
