Dakota Johnson recalls ‘crazy’ audition feedback that cost her a role
A handshake at an audition cost Dakota a role and left her stunned
Dakota Johnson has reflected on an unexpected setback early in her career, revealing she once lost a role for what she believed was simply good manners.
Speaking in a recent interview with Hits Radio, the actress shared that during a callback audition, she greeted everyone in the room with a handshake and introduced herself before performing her scene.
However, the response she received afterward caught her off guard.
“I didn’t get the job because they said I was being cocky,” Johnson said, explaining she was labeled “pompous” and accused of trying to impress the casting team. “I just had manners. It was pretty crazy.”
The 36-year-old star, who comes from a well-known Hollywood lineage as the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, and granddaughter of Tippi Hedren, has since become known not only for her performances but also for her candid perspective on the film industry.
In previous interviews, Johnson has spoken openly about prioritizing healthy work environments and steering clear of toxic productions.
She emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that she no longer engages in projects that lack mutual respect or creative alignment.
“If it’s not a good match, then it’s not a good match,” she said in an earlier conversation, adding that she avoids environments that are “not fun or fulfilling or healthy.”
Now also working as a producer, Johnson highlighted how her evolving role in the industry allows her to shape projects and select teams that reflect her values.
She stressed that kindness and collaboration are non-negotiable, making it clear she has little tolerance for uncooperative or negative behavior on set.
Looking ahead, Johnson is set to star in Verity, an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel.
The upcoming thriller will see her sharing the screen with Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, with its release slated for October.
