Christopher North, the founding keyboardist of the Grammy-nominated rock band Ambrosia, has died at the age of 75.

The band confirmed his passing in a statement shared on March 30, honoring North as a defining force behind their sound.

Known for hits like “How Much I Feel” and “Biggest Part of Me,” Ambrosia credited North’s mastery of the Hammond B3 organ for shaping their signature blend of progressive and soft rock.

“Fans of Ambrosia, we honor the legendary life and career of our dearest family member Christopher North, the ‘Hammond B3 King’ whose sonic architecture defined a generation,” the band said.

North died from complications related to pneumonia, according to reports, several months after he was involved in a serious accident.

His bandmates noted he had also recently overcome a battle with throat cancer.

Born in San Francisco in 1951, North began playing music at a young age and co-founded Ambrosia in 1970 alongside David Pack, Joe Puerta, and Burleigh Drummond.

The band rose to prominence in the mid-1970s, earning acclaim for their intricate arrangements and polished sound.

Bandmate David Pack paid tribute to North’s larger-than-life presence, describing him as a “legendary” performer whose intensity on stage left a lasting impression.

“If you saw the original band live, you couldn’t keep your eyes off his wild and engaging stage persona,” he said, recalling how North would often play with such force that he broke keys on his organ.

Though North briefly stepped away from the band due to health struggles, he later returned and continued touring with Ambrosia into the 2020s.

Beyond the group, he also contributed to projects including The Alan Parsons Project’s Tales of Mystery and Imagination.
