Meryl Streep is playing a crucial role in adapting a cherished book for television.
The Academy Award-winning performer, 76, will headline a forthcoming Netflix series adapted from Jonathan Franzen’s 2001 book The Corrections, as the streaming platform announced on April 2.
The Corrections, according to the book’s description, centers around Enid Lambert. Facing her husband Alfred’s escalating Parkinson's disease, she opts to summon their three grown children — Gary, Chip, and Denise — home for one final Christmas gathering.
The book reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and received the 2001 National Book Award for Fiction. It was also nominated for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
The series will be under the direction of Oscar-winning Cord Jefferson, noted for works like Watchmen and American Fiction, while Franzen will handle the adaptation.
Streep will portray Enid and will serve as an executive producer alongside Jefferson, Franzen, Nicole Clemens, Paul Lee, and Mark Roybal.
The release date for this television version has yet to be revealed.
This is not the only book-related project that awaits Streep. She is set to star opposite Anne Hathaway in the eagerly awaited follow-up The Devil Wears Prada 2, scheduled to hit cinemas on May 1.
Streep will be reprising her iconic role as the fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly.
The original The Devil Wears Prada movie was inspired by Laura Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name.
“Despite our awareness of the first film’s legacy from two decades past, none of us anticipated the overwhelming mix of positive energy and keen interest that swept over us,” Streep remarked about filming the sequel in a March 25 Harper’s Bazaar discussion. “Security barriers and crowd management were a necessity.”
In 2022, Variety reported that Franzen’s 2010 book Freedom would be transformed into a TV series by Melanie Marnich. Franzen’s latest book, Crossroads, came out in 2021.
