Skincare routines must be adjusted with the seasons to help the skin cope with environmental challenges. In summer, excessive heat and profuse sweating can easily disturb the skin's natural balance.

Dr Anika Goel, a dermatologist and founder at Soul Derma Clinic, explained that double cleansing is a two-step method designed to address these issues.

According to the specialist, “The first step involves an oil-based cleanser, which helps dissolve oil-based impurities like sebum and SPF. This is followed by a water-based cleanser that removes sweat, dirt, and any remaining residue.”

Choosing appropriate products is vital, such as lightweight balms followed by a gentle face wash suited to specific skin types.

Is it necessary in summers?

With increased oil production and the regular application of sun protection, there is a significant risk of pore congestion.

Dr Akshita Bhan, a skin and aesthetic expert at Studio 1915 Luxury Aesthetic Clinic, noted that the practice is particularly useful during warmer months.

However, she cautioned that the method is not universal. “With increased sweating, oil production, and regular use of sunscreen, there is a higher chance of pore congestion if the skin isn’t cleansed properly,” she reasoned.

For those with sensitive or dry skin, over-cleansing may actually irritate the skin barrier and lead to unwanted dehydration.

How to add to skincare?

Both professionals suggested that this practice should be reserved for the evening.

  • Limit double cleansing to the nighttime routine.
  • Use gentle, non-comedogenic products to avoid clogging pores.
  • Look for ingredients like niacinamide, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid to support the skin barrier.
