Dame Elaine Paige has been celebrated with the 2026 Special Award at the Olivier Awards, receiving a heartfelt message from Queen Camilla in recognition of the musical theatre legend's outstanding achievements.

Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber, who gave the award, referred to Dame Elaine as his "longest-standing friend" and "the leading lady of musical theater," and shared the Queen's tribute with the ceremony attendees.

In her message, Camilla expressed: "Throughout your career, your exceptional talent, unwavering commitment, and kind spirit have truly made you a pivotal figure in musical theater."

The Queen further stated: "You've undeniably brought immense joy to countless individuals worldwide, and we are all grateful to you."

Dame Elaine's illustrious career has spanned many years, with notable appearances in shows such as Cats and Evita.

While accepting the award on stage, Dame Elaine openly reflected on the challenging beginnings of her career, calling it “a surreal experience”.

She recounted enduring "small roles, chorus parts, and numerous rejections" along with extended periods without work.

"That terrible feeling we all recognize 'Oh I’m never going to work again' and the real struggle to keep pushing forward, and you ponder, 'Perhaps I should just give it all up,'" she revealed to the audience.

The singer credited her late father for the inspiration that carried her through those tough times, sharing his mantra, "perseverance furthers".

Dame Elaine's illustrious career has spanned many years, with notable appearances in shows such as Cats and Evita.

Dame Elaine mentioned this advice instilled "resilience, determination, and commitment," along with a deep appreciation for every chance that eventually came her way.

The pivotal moment that changed Dame Elaine’s path was with Evita, the musical by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice, which catapulted her to fame.

"Thank you, Andrew and Tim, that was it, that particular show transformed my life completely," she expressed during her acceptance remarks.

The BBC Radio 2 broadcaster, known for her Sunday musicals show, stated that music and theater have been "the driving force" in her life.

Reflecting on her journey, Dame Elaine was amazed by its path and length.

"When I look back, it’s almost unbelievable to see the path and tenacity of it all," she pondered, noting the evening's honor was something she could hardly believe was happening.

Prior to Dame Elaine accepting her award, video tributes from notable figures in theater and film were showcased to the audience, including Sir Tim Rice and Hugh Jackman, who paid tribute to the star.

Lyricist Don Black commended her for her "incredible voice" and "infectious laughter."

Dame Elaine concluded her speech by encouraging aspiring artists to find "your tribe, your voice, and your bravery."

She urged the next wave of performers to "disregard anyone who says it’s impossible."

The seasoned artist hoped that young talents might one day see themselves in her shoes, telling them: "May you perhaps one day find yourself where I stand now, somewhat astounded but profoundly thankful for every partnership, every performance, and every note that has brought me here."
