An internal investigation has been launched after a sheriff's deputy involved in a California SWAT operation was allegedly observed scrolling through a dating app during a high-stakes standoff.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office initiated the probe after aerial footage from CBS Los Angeles captured the Special Enforcement Bureau member crouched behind an armoured vehicle.

The deputy appeared to be engaged with his mobile phone while the tactical situation was still active.

In a formal statement obtained by PEOPLE, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office addressed the footage from the 8 April 2026 incident.

The department noted: “This behavior does not reflect the standards, expectations, or policies of our department."

The statement further emphasised that they "have initiated an internal investigation and will take appropriate action based on the findings."

The office maintains that it remains committed to professionalism and holding all employees accountable for their conduct during field operations.

The incident occurred in Jurupa Valley during the pursuit of a grand theft suspect. The chase ended near a local high school after a deputy utilised a grappler to stop the vehicle, which then crashed into a brick wall.

The suspect reportedly refused to surrender to the surrounding officers. Tragically, the individual was later found deceased with "injuries consistent with a self-inflicted gunshot wound," according to the sheriff’s office.

While the suspect has not yet been identified, the department is facing intense public scrutiny. This investigation marks a significant moment of accountability for the agency as they review tactical protocols and the future disciplinary actions for the personnel involved.
