A harrowing attempted kidnapping at a Walmart in Omaha, Nebraska, ended in tragedy on Tuesday, after a woman attacked a young child.

The Omaha Police Department (OPD) reported that Noemi Guzman, 31, shoplifted a large kitchen knife before approaching a three-year-old boy and his guardian.

Surveillance footage captured the moment Guzman used the weapon to force the guardian away from the trolley while keeping the child captive.

Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 9:15am following emergency calls. They confronted Guzman in the car park as she pushed the trolley containing the toddler.

Despite multiple commands to surrender the weapon, Guzman made several threats and proceeded to cut the child's face.

In response to the immediate danger, officers discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect. Although police attempted to provide lifesaving first aid, Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The toddler was swiftly rescued from the trolley by his guardian and a bystander. He was subsequently transported to the Children’s Hospital by Omaha Fire Department medics for treatment. Thankfully, his injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

OPD Chief Todd Schmaderer praised the responding officers for their "professionalism and direct action" in saving the boy's life. "Omaha police officers stand ready to act with courage and decisiveness," he stated.

The OPD Involved Investigations Team and the Nebraska State Patrol are currently conducting a comprehensive review of the shooting.

This violent event follows several high-profile supermarket security incidents across the United States that have prompted increased calls for enhanced public safety measures.
