John Cena reveals how early struggles shaped his mission to support family
The Hollywood star is now using his platform to promote financial awareness and stability
John Cena has begun a new chapter after leaving professional wrestling, reflecting on his journey from adversity to success and how it has shaped his dedication to family and financial responsibility.
In a recent interview with People, the 48-year-old revealed that while he still misses being in the ring, retirement has allowed him to prioritize time with loved ones, particularly his wife, Shay Shariatzadeh, after years of juggling a demanding schedule across wrestling and Hollywood.
“Of course I miss being in the ring,” Cena admitted, adding that closing one chapter has opened the door to a more balanced life. His final match took place in December, marking the end of a storied career in WWE.
Cena’s perspective on life and money, he said, is deeply rooted in his early struggles, including a period when he lived in his car while trying to make a name for himself.
Growing up in an environment where financial instability was common, he said, left a lasting impact.
“I came up in an environment where everyone around me was in debt,” he recalled, noting that a lack of financial education often left people uncertain about what stability truly means.
Now, with more time on his hands, Cena is actively helping his family improve their financial literacy.
He shared that he has supported several relatives, including his parents, brothers, and extended family, in better understanding money management.
A recent conversation with one of his brothers further reinforced that mission. According to Cena, the discussion highlighted how many people seek happiness and security without clearly defining what those goals look like.
Beyond finances, Cena said retirement has strengthened his relationship with Shariatzadeh.
He acknowledged that during the height of his career, balancing multiple commitments often left little time for personal connection.
The couple now prioritizes simple daily rituals from morning coffee and journaling to quiet evenings sharing a drink as a way to reconnect.
“These moments may seem small, but the return is meaningful,” Cena explained, emphasizing that investing time in relationships has become one of his most valuable pursuits.
