Madonna stuns Coachella crowd with surprise Sabrina Carpenter duet after decade away
The pop icon performed her classic hits alongside Sabrina Carpenter in a full-circle festival moment
Madonna made a surprise return to the Coachella stage after more than a decade, joining Sabrina Carpenter during her headlining set in a standout moment of the festival’s second weekend.
The 67-year-old pop icon emerged dramatically on April 17 during Carpenter’s performance transition, drawing a roaring reaction from the crowd.
The duo launched into renditions of Madonna’s classics “Vogue” and “Like a Prayer,” before debuting what appeared to be a new track from her upcoming album Confessions II.
Addressing the audience, Madonna reflected on her history with the festival, calling the moment “full circle.”
She recalled first performing material from her 2005 album Confessions on a Dancefloor at Coachella two decades ago, adding that returning to the stage held deep personal significance.
The appearance marked Madonna’s first Coachella performance since 2015, when she joined Drake during his headlining set.
Carpenter, 26, matched the high-energy moment in a white strapless bodysuit, while Madonna opted for a bold purple corset ensemble.
Their onstage chemistry included light humor, with Madonna joking about performing alongside someone “shorter” than her.
The collaboration followed Carpenter’s earlier tribute to Madonna, having worn a vintage Bob Mackie gown once donned by the singer at the 1991 Oscars during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
Carpenter’s Coachella run has been marked by elaborate staging and celebrity cameos.
Her debut headlining set featured appearances from Sam Elliott, Will Ferrell, Samuel L. Jackson and Susan Sarandon. During the second weekend, Terry Crews and Geena Davis also made appearances.
The performance comes amid growing anticipation for Confessions II, which is set for release on July 3.
Madonna recently described the project as an extension of her dance-floor philosophy, calling it a “ritualistic space where movement replaces language.”
