‘Heated Rivalry’ season 2 to take a ‘much more serious’ direction, creator teases
The new season moves beyond the early focus on romance and sexual tension
Heated Rivalry is set to return with a noticeably more serious tone in its upcoming second season, according to creator Jacob Tierney.
Speaking at BookCon in New York City, Tierney revealed that the next chapter of the hit sports romance will move away from its early focus on intense flirtation and youthful sexual tension, and instead explore a more mature and emotionally complex relationship dynamic.
“It really is different,” he said. “There’s still lots of flirting, and there’s lots of sex, but this kind of danger… is largely gone.”
Based on Game Changers, the series follows the evolving relationship between two professional hockey players, with season one gaining strong audience attention for its blend of romance and sports drama.
Season two will see the return of actors Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, with filming expected to begin this summer.
The new season draws inspiration from the novel The Long Game, which picks up roughly a decade into the characters’ relationship.
Tierney said the story will focus on what happens when the initial intensity of romance fades and couples are forced to confront deeper issues.
“What do you do after the rush of danger is gone and yet now you have to live in a relationship where you still aren’t communicating properly?” he explained. “You can say you love each other, but there’s so much more than that to make a relationship successful.”
He also suggested that the material may be extensive enough to be split across more than one season, noting, “It’s a lot of book.”
Meanwhile, Storrie, who plays Ilya Rozanov, recently reflected on the show’s unexpected popularity, admitting he initially braced for a muted response.
“It’s been shocking because I’m a nihilist when it comes to how I think things are going to be received,” he told Interview magazine. “I was fully prepared for nothing to really come of this.”
Despite those expectations, the series has developed a strong following, with anticipation now building for its more emotionally grounded second season.
