A mother who survived a devastating mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, remains hospitalized with a bullet still lodged in her face as she continues to recover from injuries that also left her struggling with severe memory issues, a family member has said.

Christina Snow was among the survivors of the April 19 attack that claimed the lives of eight children, including three of her own.

According to her cousin Jamarckus Snow, she was shot in the face during the incident and is now facing ongoing medical complications while grieving an unimaginable loss.

Speaking to NBC News, Jamarckus said doctors have so far chosen not to operate due to the risk involved, leaving the bullet in place as she continues treatment.

He added that Christina is also experiencing cognitive effects from the trauma, including periods of confusion and memory loss.

“Sometimes she wakes up and thinks she has to get her kids ready for school,” he said, describing how she can temporarily forget that her children have died. “One day she knows, and the next day she thinks they’re still there.”

The shooting, which occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at a residence in Shreveport, was carried out by Shamar Elkins, who authorities say killed eight children in total before later dying following a police pursuit.

Seven of the victims were his own children, while one was a cousin, according to officials.

The victims included Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5.

Christina Snow and another woman survived the attack. The second survivor, Elkins’ wife, Shaneiqua Pugh, required surgery following her injuries, according to reports.

A 12-year-old girl also survived after escaping the home and suffered broken bones.

Authorities have described the incident as a domestic-related mass shooting, and investigations remain ongoing. Federal prosecutors have also arrested a 56-year-old man in connection with the firearm used in the attack.

Family members say the tragedy has left lasting emotional devastation alongside the physical injuries.

Jamarckus Snow described Christina as a devoted mother who consistently prioritized her children, adding that the situation is “devastating” for the entire family.
